Bernie graduated from the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg with an MB BCh degree and then undertook specialist training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, the Royal Australian College and a Foundation Fellow of the Royal New Zealand College.
Bernie and his family immigrated to New Zealand in 1976, He has worked in medical positions in several countries including South Africa, Israel, Hong Kong, Australia, United Kingdom and New Zealand.
Bernie holds an MBA and MPhil in Information Systems from Massey University. He has a BA in Philosophy and Logic from the University of South Africa and has also completed the Diploma in Professional Ethics at Aucklnad University.
He is a founding member of the Australian Gynaecological Endoscopy Society and an Executive member of the Australian Menopause Society.
He is also a member of the American Urogynaecology Society.
He has presented papers at many national and international conferences and has published articles in several leading medical journals.
He has published a book "Incontinence is NO Laughing Matter". This is easy reading and very informative on the subject.
His special interests in Gynaecology include:

- Gynaelogical ultrasound
He has practiced on the North Shore for over 20 years.

Dr Ammar Al-Abid
Ammar is an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist and has joined our practice.
Ammar and his wife left Baghdad in 1994 and headed for our beautiful country. After 16 years here he's long since been "kiwified". He is an ardent AB's supporter, follows the Black Caps and has recently developed a passion for golf.
Ammar graduated from the University of Baghdad in 1988 and subsequently spent 4 years of his residency in Iraq. He did 4 years of general surgery and continued his training in O & G around the Auckland region gaining his Fellowship of the RANZCOG in 2008. His speciality is pelvic pain and laparoscopic surgery as well as all general gynaecological problems and Obstetrics including high risk obstetrics.
Ammar splits his time between The Pelvic Floor Clinic and work in the Gynaecological department at North Shore Hospital.
The best part of his work is seeing patient enjoying a better quality of life after treatment / surgery as he realises there can be nothing more debilitating than living with pain. He is here to help and advise you on all the options available to find the right solution for you.
Ammar is married with two lovely daughters and in the little spare time he has he does enjoy playing tennis and golf.
